One of California’s most beloved teachers is returning to Union Yoga! Her workshops sell out so please sign up in advance to reserve your space. Expect a rich, learning experience in a class setting with room to ask questions, explore possibilities within your own practice, chanting and lots of playfulness.

The Yin & Yang of Yoga In this workshop series we will explore the yin and yang of yoga — back bends and forward bends. The yin and yang symbol represents how seemingly opposite forces can be complimentary and even interdependent. This perfectly describes the relationship between back bends and forward bends. Both help us open up to possibility and love.

Workshop #1: Back Bends for Courage Back bends build heat, and help us to be courageous. Our back bend project for this workshop is the entrance into Full Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana) from Standing — this is know as Drop Backs. We will prepare our bodies extensively, and explore strategies to safely work up toward this challenging entrance. Expect to be challenged, to have fun and to leave feeling empowered and courageous!

Workshop #2: Forward Bends for Self Acceptance Forward bends are cooling, and help us to practice self acceptance. B.K.S. Iyengar says that four poses should be used to prep the body for a full forward bend over two straight legs (Paschimottanasana) — Janu Sirsasana, Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana, Triang Mukhaikapada Paschimottansana and Marichyasana 1. So, our ultimate goal is Paschimottanasana, but we will explore each of these poses in depth. Expect to gain a greater understanding of and opening in these poses, and expect to leave feeling nurtured!
